BEYOND THE STREETS Post Graffiti

BEYOND THE STREETS is pleased to announce its return to Southampton Arts Center this summer with its latest exhibition, BEYOND THE STREETS POST GRAFFITI, premiering three years after its widely acclaimed BEYOND THE STREETS on PAPER opening in 2021.

The concept of POST GRAFFITI encapsulates the genre's journey of rebellious subway artists, originating from 70’s and 80’s NYC, to the global movement they’ve inspired. The term signifies a shift from the illicit nature of traditional graffiti to a more accepted, legitimate art form in gallery settings. As the movement has progressed, artists associated with POST GRAFFITI continue to draw from the rich history of graffiti writing and the streets, forming a loose coalition that blurs and elevates their source inspiration through drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation.

POST GRAFFITI is at the core of BEYOND THE STREETS, representing the embodiment of a larger picture of how far it has all gone and how raw it still remains. Graffiti has become a cultural phenomenon that informs music, fashion, politics, entertainment, marketing, and, of course, contemporary art. It has been on the runways of major fashion houses and memorialized in books and documentaries. If a barometer is ever needed to indicate how far graffiti as a cultural touchstone has gone, The Simpsons, ever the etched-in-stone pop-cultural icon, has not only made Bart Simpson a tagger, but has featured a slew of graffiti artists over the years.

BEYOND THE STREETS POST GRAFFITI will be curated at the Southampton Arts Center, a historical building that was originally opened to the public in August of 1898 by art collector Samuel Longstreth Parrish. Originally called The Art Museum at Southampton, the space served to house Parrish’s extensive collection of Italian Renaissance art and reproductions of classical Greek and Roman statuary. Opening nearly 125 years to the year of the building’s construction completion, the show will encompass over 8,000 sq. ft of space and scenic outdoor grounds, featuring paintings and sculptures from over 25 artists, along with ephemeral moments and works that tell the story of graffiti from its early days to the present and future of the artform.

BEYOND THE STREETS POST GRAFFITI opens May 11, 2024, on view through July 20, 2024. Exclusive merchandise and printed matter will be available within the gallery gift shop for the duration of the exhibition.

TRACKS OF TIME

BEYOND THE STREETS is pleased to announce upcoming solo exhibitions from artists HuskMitNavn, POSE and Tim Conlon which will be on view at our Los Angeles gallery September 16th to October 21st.

“TRACKS OF TIME”, a new exhibition from Los Angeles-based artist Tim Conlon celebrates the artist’s 30 year milestone of painting freight trains with an all-new body of work. “TRACKS OF TIME” celebrates the journeys of freight trains and the indelible impact they’re had on the graffiti world, as an industrial canvas for mark-markers and rule-breakers to broadcast their message to America.

About the show, Tim Conlon shares, “The paintings capture trains the way I want to visually remember standing right in front of them. You paint these trains, and they leave. Who knows where they end up, when or if you will ever see them again. When they do pop back up, they have a story to tell. But what happened and where did they go? From original logos, restamped by new companies, layers of graffiti and buff. They are all time stamps in the life of the train car. Seeing benched trains with my graffiti now makes me rack my head to remember that moment in time when it was painted. Where was I, who was I with, what was going on in life? That is really the most important thing to me at this point.”

Featuring G Scale (1:24) and N Scale (1:160) model trains, as well as a series of new paintings, Tracks of Time celebrates the journeys of freight trains and the indelible impact they’re had on the graffiti world, as an industrial canvas for mark-markers and rule-breakers to broadcast their message to America. The show opens on September 16, 2023 from 11AM-6PM, running through October 21, 2023. Exclusive merchandise will be available within the gallery gift shop for the duration of the exhibition.

Join us for the opening reception Saturday, September 16th from 11am to 6pm.

BEYOND THE STREETS London

DISCOVER the most comprehensive street art and graffiti exhibition to open in the UK with the international blockbuster arrival of BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON this February. Marking the first time in eight years a show has occupied the entirety of Saatchi Gallery, the exhibition will feature original art, rare ephemera, photography, immersive and site-specific installations, archival fashion, and surprises from over 150 artists, icons, rule-breakers and mark-makers.

BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON pays homage to the monumental moments from the worlds of graffiti, street art, hip-hop and punk rock as well as the artists who immortalised them. From painting trains to social activism, to the clothes we wear and the perception of underground art and culture - leading to a global creative revolution. BEYOND THE STREETS LONDON is a celebration of graffiti's core ethos of an innate desire for mark-making and challenging authority. By its very nature, graffiti is ephemeral, its own existence is temporary, but the culture and its rebellious spirit prevail.

Delving into the underground subculture reveals the deep connection between graffiti and the American landscape, as well as the artists’ obsession with putting life and limb on the line to make their voices heard.

Between the Lines

Roman Fine Art is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition by Tim Conlon. This exhibition of new paintings and train sculptures titled Between the Lines marks Conlon’s first solo exhibit at Roman Fine Art. The exhibit will open with a reception for the artist Saturday, September 2, 6-8pm.

Between the Lines showcases the latest work in Conlon’s ongoing Blank Canvas series, a collection of freight train paintings that combine typography, abstraction and trompe-l’oeil. Using spray paint as the medium, the paintings are scale studies that bring railroad logos, weathered metal and paint and the art of graffiti into close focus. Conlon has spent almost twenty-five years walking train lines and documenting the plethora of rail company cars that have since consolidated or given way to time and decay. With the advent of intermodal freight transport, the once prevalent boxcars inch closer to extinction as shipping containers take their place.

Between the Lines presents the findings of a rail archeologist. This survey features snapshots of these shipping behemoths preserved on canvas, as well as a study of G scale model trains. The train paintings feature the clean lines of manufactured steel and the organic beauty of oxidation with an overlay of modern day graffiti. Conlon’s work involves many layers and color transitions in a mixed media fashion. About this style, Conlon says, “Certain pieces that I’ve created depend on acrylics for effect and detail, but I try to work within the parameters or ‘rules’ of a graffiti artist: your work must show your ability to produce strictly from a can of spray paint or marker. A writer’s ‘can control’ is the most important painting skill to learn, so it has been important to me to continue evolving this technique on to canvas.”

Conlon is straddling the world of urban art and the traditional gallery space to bridge ideas from work in the studio to pieces on the street. Conlon’s goal is to build on the traditional letterform techniques he has learned through spray painting while pushing the boundaries of art using the basic tools of graffiti to create themes that appeal to a wider audience.

Do you enjoy trains and graffiti or both of them together? If so, Baltimore-based artist, Tim Conlon will be exhibiting life-size aerosol paintings of aged freight cars and weathered model trains featuring scaled-to-size graffiti this Saturday at The Seventh Letter Flagship Store and Gallery. We’ve seen some of Conlon’s paintings in person and his renderings are of the highest quality. The artist’s obsession with freight train graffiti has spanned over twenty years, attracted to the logos, typography and color schemes of freight trains old and new. About this specfic collection of work, Conlon say, “I discovered this art form when I was living in Baltimore and the nationwide freight train graffiti scene was just emerging. Because Baltimore is one of the biggest port cities on the east coast, commercial cargo regularly arrived on large ships in Baltimore Harbor and was then transferred to freight trains headed toward larger cities like Atlanta, St. Louis, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Train cars were everywhere and, in many ways, served as a revolving art gallery for graffiti and train lovers alike.”

Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980s

Pump Me Up: D.C. Subculture of the 1980s is the first exhibition to explore the thriving underground of Washington, D.C., during the 1980s, giving visual form to the raucous energy of graffiti, Go-Go music, and a world-renowned punk and hardcore scene.

The exhibition explores the visual culture of the “other D.C.,” demonstrating its place in the history of street art as well as that of America’s capital city. In the midst of notorious problems with drugs and corruption, D.C. gave birth to an infectious visual culture captured in the exhibition through posters, graffiti, graphic art, archival photographs, and ephemera. Pump Me Up tells a local history from a local point of view, while providing a framework for the contemporary surge of interest in street art and underground graphics.

"RECOGNIZE! Hip Hop and Contemporary Portraiture" was created in conjunction with a temporary gallery exhibition installed at the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. The exhibition opened on February 8, 2008 and closed on October 26, 2008.

The six artists and one poet whose work is included in "RECOGNIZE!" have approached hip hop culture through the lens of portraiture, and, in combination, their contributions highlight its vitality and beauty. Hip hop has inspired people throughout its history to use their minds and their talent to create something larger than simply themselves. Whether they have found expression DJ-ing, MC-ing, break-dancing, or art-making, hip hop has given voice and visibility to a new generation.
